Notice how over the Dm7 chord we play the 5, 6, ♭7, and ♭3. It’s not uncommon to omit the root note when soloing over chord changes, or at least delay the arrival back to the root until the end of the solo for maximum resolution!

Hailing from South Africa, Sulene is a multi-instrumentalist, artist, producer, and composer who you’ve likely seen or heard before, whether you know it or not. You may have witnessed her blue hair lighting up late-night TV when she’s toured the world as Nate Ruess of fun.’s guitarist. You’ve probably heard her music scoring your favorite Showtime drama, Al Pacino movie, or Verizon commercial. You may even know her as the rocker chick avatar shredding on Rock Band VR.

It’s really something, even in robotic MIDI form. The chromaticism leapt right out at me on first hearing. It’s worth going on a little journey so you understand what chromaticism is and why it’s a big deal. The chromatic scale is the one you get when you play all 12 notes in the Western tuning system, all the notes on the piano or guitar or whatever. The chromatic scale sounds pretty bad. It’s too much information. The notes don’t feel like they’re related in any particular way, like there’s any logic to them.

I can spend an ungodly amount of time shopping, especially at Buffalo Exchange, simply because the music is good. Here, you’ll find vintage, funky threads, hats, jewelry, costumes, coats, etc. If you have some time and need a cute outfit for a night on the town, then definitely make a pit stop here (but be prepared to stay longer than you initially planned). You’ll find a cool outfit while listening to the soundtrack of your life.

Filippo Faustini is a guitarist and producer based in London. He graduated in Modern Guitar at the Conservatoire in Frosinone (Italy) and then he completed an MA in Composition for Moving Images at City University (London). He is the guitarist and producer for the London-based alt rock/ambient band, Alice in the Cruel Sea. Filippo is also the co-founder of a recently formed music production company called Music Brewery where he works as producer and mixing engineer.

So much of today’s new technologies tend to offer (at least in marketing speak) out-of-the-box solutions to musicians’ and students’ problems. Softwares and plugins, devices and networks, are all designed to minimize the rough edges around taking the time to learn things the hard way, practice them, and interact with things and people. And while these tools are optional, and do provide new avenues for creative expression and learning, they sometimes also skip over some crucial steps in the lifelong learning process of the artist, particularly those steps that historically have happened in the classroom.

New Artist Model member Saskia Griffiths-Moore used a music video to share a bit of her narrative. She started with nothing but a dream — a desire to sing and create music — and was busking on the streets to make money after quitting her job cold turkey. Now that she’s realized her dream and is supporting herself fully with music, she revisited her old busking spots in London in her music video “Joy of Defeat.”
